Calculating your own GPA can help you keep track of where you are in your academic standing and help you estimate the grades necessary to achieve your desired GPA. Marshall University utilizes a 4.0 grading scale. To calculate your GPA, add the total number of credit-bearing, graded hours and divide this number into the total number of quality points. To determine your total number of quality points, multiply the credit hours for each course by the numerical value of the grade earned for each course (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0). For example, if you think you have a grade of B in PSY 201 that is a 3-hour course, that would be 9 quality points (B = 3, multiplied by 3 credit hours = 9). Add these numbers together and you will have your total number of quality points.
If you have taken courses at another institution, you will have a transfer GPA, a Marshall GPA, and a cumulative GPA (calculating your Marshall and transfer grades together). If you have only taken courses at Marshall, your Marshall GPA and your cumulative GPA will be the same.
Two different GPA calculators are available to help you:
GPA Calculator 1: This calculator provides an easy method for entering your current courses, providing an estimated GPA for those courses, and calculating the GPA you might receive. If the calculated GPA meets your desired goal, then you know you are on the right track. If the calculated GPA is less than you hoped, you know you have to work harder and improve the grades in your current courses. This calculator can also be used to assess your overall status by including your grades in previous courses and your current courses for a cumulative GPA prediction.
GPA Calculator 2: This calculator provides a way to help you calculate the GPA you need to achieve now based on your current standing and your desired cumulative GPA. You start by adding your current GPA and the number of GPA hours you have completed to date. Then, you have three options for predicting your future GPA.
