Students are subject to annual Federal Direct Loan (FDL) limits each academic year. Annual FDL limits vary based on your dependency status and grade level. You must be enrolled at least half-time (6 credits undergrad and 3 credits graduate) during the summer. All courses must be applicable to your Course Program of Study (CPOS). Any course that is not CPOS eligible will not be considered in your summer aid decision. All CPOS updates must be completed by your academic advisor, working with the registrar’s office, to qualify for an FDL and have remaining loan eligibility based on your annual and aggregate limits. You will be considered for only the FDL eligibility you indicated on your Summer Financial Aid Request.
If you have never borrowed from the FDL Program, you will have to complete Loan Entrance Counseling electronically and sign an electronic FDL Master Promissory Note. If you have previously borrowed from the Federal Direct Loan Program and your FDL Master Promissory Note is older than 10 years, you will have to sign a new one. To do this, please visit studentaid.gov.
This program is available to parents of undergraduate students and to graduate students who need funding beyond Direct Loans. Applicants must be credit-worthy to qualify for this program. A PLUS borrower may receive a PLUS Loan up to the total Estimated Cost of Attendance (COA) less financial aid resources received by the student.
Students must be enrolled half-time to qualify for the Federal Direct PLUS Loan Program. All courses must be applicable to your Course Program of Study (CPOS). Any course that is not CPOS eligible will not be considered in your summer aid decision. All CPOS updates must be completed by your academic advisor, working with the registrar’s office.
There are additional steps Federal Direct PLUS applicants must take to be considered for this program. For more information about the Federal Direct PLUS Loan Program and procedures to apply, please click here.
Students who need additional funds after considering all other financial aid programs or are ineligible for any of the financial aid programs listed above may consider a private education loan to assist with their educational costs.
This will require you to apply directly with a lender of your choice. Read more information about private education loans.
You will be sent an email to your Marshall University email account when your summer financial aid eligibility has been determined. As such, we suggest that you view the status of your financial aid eligibility by logging into myMU and accessing your financial aid records periodically after you have submitted your application. Please keep in mind, however, that the Office of SFA will process Summer Financial Aid Requests on a first-come-first-serve basis. Priority processing will be given to early filers, so please submit your request as early as possible. Due to a high volume of applications, processing will take a minimum of seven to ten business days.
SAP Considerations
As long as all eligibility requirements have been met including Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress, your summer financial aid will disburse or credit to your account as quickly as possible, but no earlier than 10 days prior to the first day of classes.
Students who have a Financial Aid Warning or a Financial Aid Probation status for the spring 2025 semester may not be considered for summer financial aid until after the spring semester concludes and grades are posted to the student’s academic transcript. As required by federal regulations, Marshall University must evaluate Satisfactory Academic Progress at the conclusion of each semester/term for students who have been placed on Financial Aid Warning or Financial Aid Probation. Students who do not meet the standards of the Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy are not eligible to receive financial aid; however, students have the right to appeal.
Refund Schedule & Options
Any federal financial aid credit balance due to you will be issued to you in the form of a refund by the Bursar’s Office. Timing of when a student receives their refund varies depending on the refund method chosen.
Projected times:
Summer A: Week of May 12
Summer B: Week of May 12
Summer C: Week of June 9
Summer D: Week of July 7
A student due a financial aid refund may choose one of the two financial aid refund options:
- Direct deposit to a current bank account; or,
- Receiving a paper check by mail (If you do not select an option, it will default to a paper check.)
For more information about financial aid refunds, visit www.marshall.edu/bursar. Financial aid will be disbursed at one time and will pay toward your total bill, which includes all terms for which you are enrolled.
Your financial aid eligibility is based on your enrollment in summer courses at the time your Summer Financial Aid Application is processed. Any change in enrollment status may impact your eligibility for certain funds and could create a balance for the summer term.
If you change your enrollment plans after your Summer Financial Aid Application Request has been processed, you must complete the Summer enrollment change request form. Be aware that any change in your enrollment could impact your financial aid eligibility. Also, if you must drop or withdraw from a course, you also must follow university procedures to drop or withdraw from your course online. This usually may be accomplished by logging into myMU and accessing your Student Records. If you have problems with registration activities online, please contact the Registrar’s Office at 304-696-6410.
