The following procedures for emergency situations are adopted by the Marshall University South Charleston Campus in case of a Shelter-In-Place, Fire/Fire Drill, Bomb Threat, or a Medical Emergency.

SHELTER IN PLACE

If emergency officials call for a Shelter-in-Place, notification will come by the Kanawha Valley Emergency Response System, primarily by a three minute steady signal from the siren located on top of the former Staunton Elementary School building, and by telephone to the Marshall University South Charleston Campus Library. In such an event, the public is advised to close and lock all doors and turn off all ventilation equipment.

The Shelter-In- Place procedure is for everyone to assemble in the interior of the second floor of each building and to turn off all ventilation equipment (HVAC). Elevators will be rendered unusable and the stairwells will be the only route of travel to the second floor. The doors entering the second floor will be taped and sealed once all personnel/visitors/students have moved to the second floor.

The front doors to each building will be locked three minutes after the Shelter-in-Place alarm.

Personnel will remain on the second floor until emergency officials have given the all clear signal and declared the Shelter-in-Place emergency is over.

FIRE/FIRE DRILL/EVACUATION PLAN

First, anyone observing a fire should immediately activate the nearest fire alarm pull box.  Second, call the front desk at extension 6-1950 or 6-8969 and give the building and location of the fire.  MUPD or the appropriate Security Officer will notify the Fire Dept. when an alarm is activated.

When a fire alarm sounds take the following steps:

A.      Gather essential effects such as car keys and purses.

B.       Evacuate the classroom/meeting room/office and close the door.

C.       Listen for any announcement made over the intercom system identifying the fire’s location so you can avoid the area.  Exit the building via the most direct path to a stairwell or exit door. (Note: Elevators will be rendered unusable)

D.      Assemble in the parking area on the east side of the building (the side nearest Staunton Elementary School) as not to impede the movement of fire fighting and other emergency vehicles and to ensure the safety of assembled personnel.

E.       Report any individual who was inside the building, but cannot be accounted for to the proper authorities.

F.       Persons should remain in a group until the all clear is given to re-enter the building.

G.       Handicapped persons on the upper floors shall be assisted to the stairwells for evacuation by emergency personnel.

BOMB THREAT

If the campus receives a bomb threat, or if a device thought to be a bomb is discovered in the buildings located on the So. Charleston Campus, DO NOT use radio communications or cell phones in the vicinity of suspected bombs or explosive device. The following procedure will be observed:

A.      A representative of Regional Operations or a representative of the contract security firm will immediately activate the building fire alarm and call the So. Charleston-Fire-Department at 911 and 304-744-0075.

B.       Everyone will evacuate the classrooms/meeting rooms/offices via the most direct path to a stairwell or exit door. (Note: Elevators will be rendered unusable)

C.       Assemble in the parking area on the east side of the Administrative Building (the side nearest the former Staunton Elementary School building). Individuals will assemble far enough away from the buildings so as not to impede the movement of emergency vehicles and to ensure the safety of the assembled personnel.

D.      Report any individual who was inside the building, but cannot be accounted for, to the proper authorities.

E.       Persons should remain in a group until the all clear is given to re-enter the building.

If the Marshall University South Charleston Campus has a medical emergency, it is our policy to dial 911 and notify the front desk of the location of the emergency by calling extension 6-1950 (Student Center Information desk) or 6-8969 (Information and Public Safety desk).
