The Simon Perry Scholarship – Current 2022-23 Award: $1,274.23

We award the Simon Perry Scholarship to a student who demonstrates excellence in the academic pursuit of knowledge in political science.

Submit an essay (800-1,000 words) detailing your academic (rather than practical) interest in politics and political science. What political ideas, concepts, authors, actors, time periods, etc. are fascinating to you? Why are you a political science major? The recipient must be an undergraduate political science major at Marshall who has completed at least 60 credit hours with a GPA of 3.3 or higher.

 


The Lawrence E. Bruce, Jr. Scholarship – Current 2022-23 Award: $1,503.92

We award the Lawrence E. Bruce, Jr. Scholarship to a student who demonstrates an international spirit during their time at Marshall.

Submit a cover letter (300-600 words) demonstrating evidence of “international spirit” as determined by: 1) an interest in a career in international affairs, 2) humanitarian service, and/or 3) a concern for children in the developing world. Applicants must also submit an essay (300-500 words) based on research about UNICEF or Lawrence E. Bruce, Jr. and the perpetuation of his spirit. Applicants must have junior or senior standing with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

 


The Harold E. Neely Scholarship – Current 2022-23 Award: $512.13

We award the Harold E. Neely Scholarship to the student who can best explain how an academic work has influenced their academic development.

Submit an essay (500-750 words) in which you discuss a book or article in the discipline of political science that has influenced your academic development. Applicants must be a political science major with at least sophomore standing (30 or more credit hours) and a GPA of 3.5 or above.

 


The Matthew A. Reese, Jr. and Martha Sedinger Reese Scholarship – Current 2022-23 Award: $4,128.70

We award the Matthew A. Reese, Jr. and Martha Sedinger Reese Scholarship to a student who demonstrates a sustained history of activism for social justice.

Submit a biographical essay (800-1000 words) that demonstrates your sustained political involvement in their community on behalf of progressive causes, organizations, and/or candidates concerned with issues of peace, justice, or social welfare. Applicants must be a West Virginia native who has graduated from a West Virginia public high school with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Preference given to students whose major student is in the College of Liberal Arts.

 


The Robert “Chuck” Chambers Scholarship – Current 2022-23 Award: $584.64

We award the Robert “Chuck” Chambers Scholarship to a student who demonstrates an interest in government and public service in West Virginia.

Submit an essay (500-750 words) detailing your interest in West Virginia state government and a commitment to public service in West Virginia. Applicants must be full-time students at the junior or senior level with a 3.5 GPA or higher.  Preference given to residents of Mingo county and demonstrated financial need.

 


The Robert R. “Bobby” Nelson Scholarship – Current 2022-23 Award: $898.58

We award the Robert R. “Bobby” Nelson Scholarship to a student with a dedicated interest in state and local government.

Submit an essay (600-750 words) detailing your interest in state and local government. Applicants for this scholarship must be residents of West Virginia and full-time political science majors with a 2.5 GPA or higher and in good academic standing. Preference given to residents of Boone and Cabell Counties.
