MURC announces research awards for faculty and undergraduates

The Marshall University Research Corporation has announced the winners of the Spring 2024 Undergraduate Creative Discovery & Research Awards and the Summer 2024 John Marshall Scholars Award Program.

The program is open to qualifying students in the College of Science, the Lewis College of Business, the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Arts and Media, the College of Education and Professional Development, the College of Engineering and Computer Sciences, the College of Health Professions and the Honors College.

Spring 2024 awardees are:

  • Rafael Alfonso (Honors College) — Simulated Coping Skills: Learning to Manage Stressors in VR
  • Melia Beckford (College of Arts and Media) — Discerning the Self: An Exploration of Identity as Seen Through Black & Biracial Hair
  • Trace Clark (College of Science) — Using Antioxidant Assays and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectroscopy to Determine the Defensive Role of Antioxidants in Tardigrades
  • Miriam Crookshanks (College of Liberal Arts) — Omission and Negligence in Classical Engagement: Implications of Selective Appropriation in Classical Texts
  • Abigail Cunningham (College of Liberal Arts) — Attention Deficits and Biases: How Lowered Attention Spans May Exacerbate Stigma Against People Who Stutter
  • Joshua Hatfield (College of Engineering and Computer Sciences) — Development of A Community Resilience Model for Emergency Management
  • Ella Hiles (Honors College) — Archival Histories of Marshall University Past-Presidents: Documentation Through Administrative Papers and News Releases

  • Cade Parlato (College of Engineering and Computer Sciences) — Determining Tree Biomass in Forests using YOLOv7 Instance Segmentation
  • Colby Perry (College of Engineering and Computer Sciences) — Immersive VR Active Shooter Preparedness Training
  • Jadyn Simon (College of Science) — Testing pain-relieving drugs for endometriosis.

Since its inception, the John Marshall Scholar program has supported the creative discovery and research work of faculty members from the College of Science, the Lewis College of Business, the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Arts and Media, the College of Education and Professional Development, the College of Engineering and Computer Sciences, the College of Health Professions and Marshall Libraries.

Summer 2024 John Marshall Scholar Awardees are:

  • Robert Ellison (College of Liberal Arts) — A Companion to Preaching and the Sermon, the Twentieth Century
  • Yousef Fazea (College of Engineering and Computer Sciences) — Exploring the Impact of Online Learning Environment, External Support, and Stress Management on Student Performance and Satisfaction at Marshall University
  • Slav Gratchev (College of Liberal Arts) — Advanced Methods of Teaching Foreign Languages: The New Development on Teaching Methodology in Today’s World
  • Chris Ingersoll (College of Arts and Media) – Designing New Solutions for Education
  • Rosalynn Quinones (College of Science) – Determination of Undeclared and Adulterated Drugs in Weight Loss Supplements
  • Syndor Roy (College of Liberal Arts) – Solon the Athenian Lawgiver and the American Constitution
  • Jill Underhill (College of Liberal Arts) – Increasing the Capacity of Cybersecurity Programs to Serve Neurodivergent College Students.
