Graduate Admissions
Applying to a graduate program at Marshall University is easy! Start by exploring our list of graduate degree and certificate programs. Once you’ve found the right program for you, review admission requirements, the plan of study and more in our Graduate Catalog.
Many of our graduate programs are available fully online. To investigate our distance-only programs, visit Marshall Online or email muonline@marshall.edu.
After we receive your application and all required materials, Graduate Admissions will forward your file to the academic department to review. The time to receive a decision varies by department, depending on how application reviews are processed.
As soon as Graduate Admissions receives the program’s decision about your application, we’ll send you an official decision letter.

To begin your application, create an account on our secure application portal. You don’t need to complete the application in one sitting – the application portal allows you to save your progress and return at your convenience.
Most application materials can be uploaded directly to your online application on your portal homepage. This ensures your documents are automatically linked to your application file. Please note that some credentials – such as transcripts, test scores or recommendations – must be submitted directly by the issuing source.
You can track the status of your application at any time by logging back into your application portal.
Once all required materials have been submitted, your completed application will be forwarded to the academic program for review.
Minimum requirements for graduate admission to Marshall University:
- Bachelor’s Degree – Applicants must have earned a bachelor’s degree from an accepted, accredited institution. Your program may require a specific degree.
- GPA Requirement – Applicants must have earned a minimum undergraduate grade point average of 2.50 on a 4-point scale. Your program may have a higher GPA requirement.
- English Proficiency – English proficiency is most often demonstrated through a high school diploma or bachelor’s degree earned in the U.S., or standardized test scores.
CAS Applications: Some graduate-level programs utilize a Central Application Service (CAS) to collect applications and materials. Please reach out to these programs directly for additional information:

Would you like to enroll in Marshall courses, but not earn a degree or certificate? Review the options below to select the program type that is right for you.
Transient – Are you enrolled in a graduate degree program at another institution and want to take a course at Marshall? Select Transient as your program. Please note – admission as a transient student is valid for one semester only, and financial aid will be awarded by your home institution (if applicable).
Non-Degree – If you’re interested in taking graduate-level courses but not earning a degree or certificate, select Non-Degree as your program. This program is also appropriate if you are seeking one of these licensures or endorsements:
In most cases, financial aid is not available for non-degree students.
