Program Overview

At Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, the master of arts in Mathematics program offers a diverse, research-active graduate faculty, along with small class sizes and an emphasis on personal attention. The core program in Mathematics requires 36 credit hours, including abstract algebra, mathematical analysis and statistics, as well as 18 hours of electives. The degree can be used for careers in business, industry and education or to prepare for study at the PhD level.

The Mathematics degree offers an optional Area of Emphasis in Statistics. In addition to a comprehensive statistics background, courses are available in Stochastic Processes, Time Series Forecasting, Statistical Computing, Regression Analysis, Experimental Design, and Nonparametric Statistics. This program in West Virginia provides a solid basis for careers in industry or for more advanced studies.

Teaching and research assistantships are available to Marshall University students in West Virginia on a competitive basis. Students who receive a graduate assistantship receive a stipend, in addition to a tuition benefit to partially offset tuition costs.

Each semester, the Mathematics department offers colloquium talks on a variety of mathematical topics. The department also hosts the Advanced Research Initiative series, featuring a distinguished guest speaker who discusses two topics.

Students are also invited to join Pi Mu Epsilon, a national mathematics honor society, which promotes academic scholarly activity among Mathematics students.

Career Opportunities
A master’s degree in Mathematics prepares students for many career paths, including quantitative fields or computer science and information technology. Students may also be qualified to teach at the university and community college level and pursue doctoral degrees, which open other career paths. The area of emphasis in statistics provides preparation for positions in data analysis, data mining, finance and academic teaching positions.
