Digital forensics is a form of forensic science that involves data recovery from digital devices during forensic investigations. Computers and other digital devices hold a wealth of information, including text, digital images, audio and video, which can serve as key evidence for solving crimes. Forensic software programs can be used to get images from digital storage media and analyze it. Information assurance involves protecting data and information against risks during processing, storage and transmission.
The Cyber Forensics and Security bachelor’s degree program at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, helps students like you hone forensic science and computer forensics skills to investigate cybersecurity problems. Our Digital Forensics faculty have real-world experience and emphasize critical thinking, problem solving and communication. The curriculum teaches technology-based forensic science skills in a challenging, hands-on environment, using many of the same professional tools, techniques and procedures you will use upon entering the workforce.

All our core digital forensics courses include hands-on lab experiences where students hone their digital forensics, data recovery, and cybersecurity knowledge and skills. You will get extensive experience using top, industry-standard tools such as AccessData’s Forensic Toolkit, Kali Linux, Cellebrite, WireShair, Social Engineering Toolkit (SET), Network Miner, Metasploit, Armitage, NMAP and many others.
According to a 2016 article in Forbes Magazine, “More than 209,000 cyber security jobs in the U.S. are unfilled, and postings are up 74% over the past five years…” That year, the median annual pay for information security analysts was $92,600 per year and projected growth between 2014-24 was 18% nationally, as reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Cyber Forensics and Security degree program students take classes in the Weisberg Family Applied Engineering Complex—a 155,000-square-foot facility that opened in 2015 with the latest technological capabilities. Our program’s majors will find they can gain experience in an advanced laboratory with the latest equipment used in the field around the country—and right here on our campus in West Virginia.
