What is teletherapy?
Teletherapy allows clients who are unable to access in-person therapy or specialty services to receive treatment in an alternate fashion. Research has shown that teletherapy provides effective treatment for clients who represent a wide variety of ages and communication disorders (e.g. Edwards, Stredler-Brown, & Houston, 2011; Short, Rea, Houston, Scott, & Forducey, 2016; Theodoros, 2011). The telepractice clinic, an extension of the Marshall University Speech and Hearing Center, seeks to provide high-quality speech and language services to eligible clients.
When and where can I receive services?
Teletherapy appointments are scheduled based on available openings. During teletherapy sessions, the client and clinician interact with each other in real-time with the clinician using a computer at the Marshall University Speech and Hearing Center.
What else do I need to know about telepractice?
The services provided by the telepractice clinic abide by the policies and procedures of the Marshall University College of Health Professions and the School of Medicine, Marshall Health, and the Health insurance Portability and Accessibility Act (HIPPA). Clinical recommendations for teletherapy are based on each client’s unique needs. Therefore, telepractice is recommended for clients based on various factors such as the client’s age and the type and severity of their communication disorder. All teletherapy sessions are conducted via a video conferencing system that is compliant with regulations set forth by HIPAA.
What costs are associated with these services?
The Marshall University Speech and Hearing Center will attempt to bill insurance for telehealth services. If your insurance does not cover services, you may be eligible for the Scholarship Program.
