When and Where does this take place?
The clinic operates part-time, and is scheduled for the final Friday of each month; the clinic is located in the Communication Disorders department, on the first floor of Marshall University’s Smith Hall, Room 143 (on the corner of Hal Greer Boulevard and 3rd Avenue). Parking is available in the parking garage located on 6th Avenue and 17th Street. Clinic staff will validate parking for you so there will be no parking fee.
Who is involved?
The clinic is a teaching clinic. Graduate students from each discipline may be involved in some aspects of the assessment. Staff from the WV ATC will contact you by telephone before your scheduled appointment to pre-screen for illness and go over the process with you, and to ask questions (such as what sort of snacks, toys, etc. a child may like) that will help the team in its assessment.
How long does it last?
The assessment may last between 2.5 – 4.5 hours.
What does this entail?
A formal diagnosis will not be provided on the day of the assessment. A final report that details findings, suggests resources and recommendations, and provides a formal diagnostic outcome will be delivered to you by mail approximately ten weeks after the assessment.
Cost
Fees may vary according to insurance policies. The client, or the client’s parent or guardian if the client is a minor, will be responsible for fees not covered by insurance. Some insurance companies require a preauthorization for assessments. Please contact your insurance company to determine if this is necessary. A payment plan can be provided as an option if necessary and if agreed upon in advance. The intake packet will include a form for general rates that may apply. In order to provide families with the highest level of quality diagnostic care, professionals from a variety of academic and health care entities are involved in the Multidiscipline Diagnostic and Assessment Clinic. Due to this, payment for each discipline’s assessment procedure will be billed separately and within their facility. The types of assessments provided will be determined based on each individual’s need; however, most assessments will at a minimum include a Speech and Language Evaluation, a Psychological Evaluation, and an Occupational Therapy Evaluation.
What do I do after the session?
An Intake Form, along with several pre-screening forms, will be sent to you in the mail. A self-addressed stamped envelope will be included so that you can return them quickly. This information must be completed and returned before an appointment will be scheduled. A doctor’s order is required and must be received prior to the assessment.
