The Oshel Parent Education Program (OPEP) was established in 2011 with the mission to support and educate families of growing communicators as well as to train graduate student clinicians to provide education and coaching to the families of their clients. Parent training and coaching is a natural extension of the speech and language services provided at Marshall Speech and Hearing Center.
We know that practice outside of the therapy room can greatly enhance a child’s progress. It is the priority of the OPEP program to teach parents the strategies they need to work with their children daily. We partner with families to help their child become a better communicator.
The OPEP program offers a lending library that makes educational materials accessible to parents and families of loved ones with communication disorders and delays. In the library, you will find resource books on a variety of topics related to communication disorders as well as children’s books, instructional DVDs, CDs, board games, computer games, and activities that families can use to work with their children at home. Clients are able to borrow items recommended by their speech/language clinicians for 2-4 weeks.
The program is housed in Smith Hall 329 on the Marshall University campus. It offers a comfortable place for consultations, family conferences, demonstration, and coaching.
Pat and Dolly Oshel believe in the value of strong family support and education. The Oshel Parent Education Program serves as a living memorial for these two people who have dedicated their lives to serving others.
