The Marshall University Memorial Student Center serves as a living memorial to those killed in the November 14, 1970 plane crash. Opened in 1971, the Memorial Student Center underwent major renovation during 1997-98, culminating in the opening of a 7,000 square foot wing on the west end of the building to house the university bookstore. The Memorial Student Center maintains the goal of providing services, facilities, conveniences and amenities to enhance life for our University community. The MSC Operations Office is responsible for business operations in the Student Center and for the implementation of contract operations, including campus-wide vending and ATM contracts with various banks. The Memorial Student Center also has a recreation area, dining areas, Catering Office, student service related offices, the Marshall Bookstore, and numerous rooms that can be scheduled for meetings, special events and conferences.
About the Memorial Student Center Fountain…
The Marshall University Fountain reminds us of the lives that were lost in a plane crash on the night of November 14, 1970. This loss included Marshall’s football team, coaches, and many community athletic boosters. The fountain, weighing 6,500 pounds and standing 13 feet high, was designed by artist and sculptor Harry Bertoia. The fountain was dedicated to the Marshall community by Marshall’s President, John G. Barker, on November 12, 1972.
The fountain form speaks of continuation, perpetuation, and in short, of life… “The living rather than commemorating death itself in the waters of life, rising, renewing, reaching to express, upward growth, immortality, eternality.” – Harry Bertoia, designer of the Marshall Memorial Fountain.
