The program requires the completion of a 3-hour clinical experience (ITL 650 Library Practice) and passing the Library Media Specialist Praxis II Test. Certification is for PreK-Adult.
As a certification endorsement program, initial teaching certification is required. The program requires the completion of 21 hours, including a 3-hour clinical experience, and passing the Library Media Specialist Praxis II Test. Certification is for K-12.
COEPD Plan Of Study – School Library Media Specialist degree
Timetable for Program
Students can begin the program any semester during the academic year. There is no specific sequence of courses, except ITL 650 Library Practice is taken at the conclusion of the program, when students have completed at least 90% of course work, to demonstrate competency in school library media standards. You will complete an Action Research Project during this semester that aligns with the American Association of School Librarian’s (AASL) 21st century standards and a need in your school, district or community.

Information on Library Practice Experience
Please note, since certification is for PreK-12, students must complete an experience at elementary, middle and secondary school levels. You will distribute these hours over the course of the program, observing smaller blocks of throughout the program. These experiences are at schools which the student selects because they are convenient for them, but schools should have fully-functioning libraries. Students who are working as school librarians use their library as their major experience, but will still be required to have experience at all grade levels. We work with you to make this happen with the least impact to your current teaching situation.
