Challenged at Redwood High School, part of the Visalia Unified School District (CA), Jerry Jensen argued that the book establishes the “victimhood” of people of color and does not represent “my America.” Community members and parents spoke out in favor of the textbook which is part of the curriculum for a pilot program offering elective ethnic studies courses. A white male student stated the ethnic studies course expanded his “knowledge of our multicultural world.” He went on to say, “I’ve never learned these things in required social studies courses. None of my fellow classmates or parents of classmates have any issues with our curriculum or the book we are reading.” A board member thought the the author’s suicide did not present the best role model for students, but she did not comment on the other authors who had committed suicide that were taught in other classes. The school board president stated that a committee of ethnic studies teachers, students, and community members will be formed as part of the community discussion to be held on the pilot program and textbook.
