Challenged on the accelerated reading list at Chinquapin Elementary School in Duplin County (NC) because the book is littered with hundreds of expletives, including racial epithets, and slang terms for homosexuals.

Challenged on the accelerated reading list at Chinquapin Elementary School in Duplin County (NC) because the book is littered with hundreds of expletives, including racial epithets, and slang terms for homosexuals. Challenged in the Coeur d’Alene (ID) School District. Some parents say the book, along with five others, should require parental permission for students to read.
2007
Retained on the Northwest Suburban HS District 214 reading list in Arlington Heights (IL) along with eight other challenged titles. A newly elected school board member raised the controversy based on excerpts from the books she’d found on the Internet.
2006
Removed from the Blue Valley School District’s high school curriculum in Overland Park (KS).
2005
Challenged for racism, offensive language and violence.
2004
Banned at the Franklin Central High School in Indianapolis (IN) because of concerns about the book’s profanity. The book was assigned in English classes for sophomores.
2003
Challenged in Fairfax (VA) school libraries by a group called Parents Against Bad Books in Schools for “profanity and descriptions of drug abuse, sexually explicit conduct and torture”. Banned from George County (MS) schools for profanity.
2002
Banned for offensive language, racism, violence, and being unsuited to age group
2001
Challenged, but retained in Arlington (TX) junior High school libraries despite a parent’s complaint that the book’s content was too strong for younger students.
