Marshall University is home to Huntington, West Virginia’s first fully LEED Certified building. In addition, there are many Green elements installed throughout campus. As we add new LEED buildings and Green features, Marshall University’s campus will truly “Be Marshall Green.”
What is a LEED Certified Building?
The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) states “LEED stands for green building leadership. LEED is transforming the way we think about how buildings and communities are designed, constructed, maintained and operated across the globe.
“LEED certified buildings save money and resources and have a positive impact on the health of occupants, while promoting renewable, clean energy.”
“LEED, or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, is a green building certification program that recognizes best-in-class building strategies and practices. To receive LEED certification, building projects satisfy prerequisites and earn points to achieve different levels of certification. Arthur Wiseberg Family Applied Engineering Complex (WAEC)
In April of 2015, construction was completed on the 145,000 square-foot, four-story Arthur Weisberg Family Applied Engineering Complex. The facility, one of the largest academic buildings on Marshall University’s campus, is located on Third Avenue between the Arthur Weisberg Family Engineering Laboratories and the Robert C. Byrd Biotechnology Science Center.
The project is soon to complete LEED Silver certification, and will utilize these sustainable features as teaching tools. Stormwater collected from roofs will be used for teaching and research projects and will also be recycled as graywater for some of the building’s plumbing… READ MORE.
WAEC Green Roof
