Marshall is community-focused, traditionally servicing the people of West Virginia and the nation. The University’s campus-wide network, MUNet, is a collection of interdepartmental and inter-building Ethernet networks tied together by a fiber-optic backbone. MUNet is continually evolving and has become the lifeblood of the University. MUNet provides a common medium that supports a client/server environment, WiFi, IP telephony, and video services to more than 15,000 campus users at 3,000 workstations. MUNet services every campus building, four remote campuses, Marshall Health and School of Medicine facilities.

Firewall
A firewall acts as a security system, helping to prevent unauthorized access to computers or network resources. A firewall follows a set of rules to filter the information entering and exiting a network, or computer, allowing or denying access to each specific request.
Firewalls ensure that your valuable information is protected by inspecting the information passing into and out of the network, filtering it based on a specific set of rules. These rules tell the firewall whether to permit or deny access to the network or computer, keeping out unauthorized users who may want to gain access to the information stored behind the firewall.
If you are responsible for a computer on the Universities network that provides Internet services like a web server, FTP server, or file server to an off-campus computer, please let us know so we can configure the firewall to accommodate these services.
To request a change, please contact the IT Service Desk and have the following information available about the static mapping request; the name of the system that needs an exception set, the IP address, and any specific ports you need open for this system. We would also ask that you remember to let us know when you no longer need this exception implemented so we can disable it accordingly.
Yes! If you are using the virtual private network (VPN) service, you can access University systems from off-campus without the need for firewall exceptions. VPN is the preferred solution for remote access. For additional help, contact the IT Service Desk by phone at 304-696-3200 or by email at itservicedesk@marshall.edu
