Housing and Residence Life is currently working with Marshall University Information Technology (IT) in an effort to expand and strengthen the Wi-Fi coverage in the residence halls. We have ordered new equipment, which we will begin installing in student rooms later this month. This equipment will provide each residence hall room with its own in-room Wi-Fi access point. This is in an effort to ensure that each room on campus has a strong and stable connection. While we had hoped that the in-room Wi-Fi access points would be delivered on-campus over the summer and installed before you arrived, they were unfortunately on backorder from the manufacturer due to their increased demand nationally. We are excited to say that the in-room access points have just arrived on-campus and are ready to be installed.
Each access point is a small box that will be connected to an Ethernet port that already exists in your room. The access point will provide you with wireless access and at the bottom of it, there will be three ports for any wired device that you need to connect directly to the Ethernet port. IT will begin work on installing the equipment into rooms over the next two months. We ask you to be patient as the IT team installs the access points because it will take some time for the units to be configured and installed in each room.
Housing and Residence Life has worked with IT to develop a timeline for the installation. Please see the information below regarding the dates and times, we will be working in your building. You are not required to be in your room during the installation process. We will have a member of the Housing and Residence Life team escorting the IT staff who will make sure that your room is left in the conditions we found it and secure.
In preparation for the installation, we ask that during your building’s time frame that you please move any furniture and/or personal belongings away from your Ethernet port. This includes anything above or below the port, including wall hangings. We also ask that you unplug any items from the Ethernet port during the time-frames as well. This will allow IT to quickly complete the work in your room.
