Living with a roommate is a great opportunity to build a friendship that can last a lifetime. Like any friendship, a roommate relationship requires open communication. As you prepare to move into the residence halls and have a roommate, please keep the following in mind:
- Be honest about your expectations concerning your living space, study times, guests/visitors, sharing items, etc., and communicate them to your roommate.
- Be open to learning new things about your roommate.
- Be flexible and willing to compromise when differences or disagreements arise.
- You and your roommate will work with your Resident Advisor to complete a roommate agreement that sets boundaries and a framework for your living space.
Sometimes it is difficult for roommates to talk about their differences, but your Resident Advisor is here to help facilitate the conversation. Housing staff can sit down with you and your roommate and discuss issues. With a little give and take, you can work together to make your environment more comfortable. If a compromise cannot be reached and a room change is the result of the conversation, these staff members can assist you with that process as well.
