About
Dr. Schöberlein’s research focuses on the intersections of science, literature, and technology in the nineteenth century. He is currently concluding work on his first monograph, based on his award-winning dissertation on the mapping of the brain in the 1800s and its impact on literary production. He has published extensively on the poet Walt Whitman, including a translation of Whitman’s novel Jack Engle into German (Berlin: Das Kulturelle Gedächtnis, 2017). Dr. Schöberlein serves as vice-president of the Digital Americanists Society, and is a contributing editor to the Walt Whitman Archive as well as co-editor of the Movable Project.
In his courses, which include the Intro to Digital Humanities, American literature before 1830, and American literature 1830-1865, Dr. Schöberlein emphasizes research-based writing, digital analysis, and a historicist approach to literature.
