Dr. John M. Conley, JD, PhD will discuss governance efforts related to the emerging genome editing technologies, exploring “hard law” regulatory approaches, both national and international, versus “soft” self-regulatory approaches that are based in traditional notions of scientific professionalism.

Conley is William Rand Kenan, Jr. Professor of Law at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. He teaches civil procedure, intellectual property, and the law of biotechnology, and has written several books and numerous articles on genomics and the law, the law of intellectual property as applied to emerging technologies, scientific evidence, and other topics in law and science.
