Henderson Center Pool

The Frederick A. Fitch Natatorium, which is located in the Cam Henderson Center on the Marshall University campus, is the home of the Marshall women’s swimming & diving program.

The Frederick A. Fitch Natatorium, an 800-seat swimming area, was opened in 1981 as part of the Cam Henderson Center. The natatorium was named in honor of a former professor and chair of physical education.

The facility features eight 25 yard lanes as well as a 13 foot deep diving well. There are two 1-meter diving boards as well as two 3-meter boards.

Facility Policies

  • Do not enter the pool without a certified lifeguard on duty. 
  • Participants should shower with soap and water before entering the pool. 
  • Appropriate swim attire is required. For clarification, please ask the lifeguards. 
  • Participants with open wounds or infectious diseases are prohibited from using the pool. 
  • Do not use aquatic facilities if you are ill with diarrhea or have had diarrhea within the past two weeks. 
  • Gum, food, and glass containers are prohibited in or around the pool. 
  • Spitting, spouting water, and blowing your nose in the water are prohibited. 
  • Participants are prohibited from hanging on the lane lines. 
  • Intentional hyperventilation or extended breath-holding activities are dangerous and prohibited. 
  • No animals are allowed in the aquatic venue or on deck, except for identified service animals. 
  • Group and private swim lessons may only be conducted by Assistant Director of Aquatics. 
  • Diving, running on the decks, and horseplay in or around the pool are prohibited. 
  • Use of all diving boards is prohibited unless authorized by Assistant Director of Aquatics. 
  • Lifeguards have the responsibility and authority to remove anyone for unsafe or inappropriate behavior. 
  • Patrons may use a daily locker at no charge, but daily lockers may not be used to store items overnight. All contents will be removed at closing, and any dry, non-perishable items will be placed into the lost and found. 
  • Cell phones, tablets, and other devices may be used throughout the facility; however, photography of any type is prohibited in the locker rooms. 
  • Swim coaches and other renters are accountable for the behavior of swimmers in all areas of the Henderson Center. If a swimmer is removed from the facility for inappropriate or unsafe behavior, they must meet in person with the Assistant Director of Aquatics before being readmitted. 
  • Lifeguards and staff have the right to refuse admittance, eject from the premises, or revoke user privileges for anyone failing to comply with health and safety policies or causing disruptive behavior. 
  • During rentals, spectators must remain in the spectator area and not on deck. 
  • Rental times listed in the rental agreement are when users have access to the water. Users may be on deck no earlier than 20 minutes before the start time and must exit the building no later than 20 minutes after the end time. 
  • Items of value, such as phones and jewelry, will be taken to the Recreation Center, logged, and placed in a safe. All other items will be held in a lost and found bin in the pool office for one month. 
  • The Henderson Pool generally does not close for lightning, but if deemed necessary for safety, it will not reopen until 30 minutes after the last audible thunder or lightning sighting. 
  • If the University is closed due to inclement weather or any other reason, the pool will be closed and all rentals will be cancelled. 
  • Abusive or offensive language will not be tolerated. 
  • Only pool personnel are allowed in the pool office. 
  • Unnecessary conversation with lifeguards while they are on duty is discouraged. 
  • Do not sit on, hang on, or swim over lane lines. 
  • The cost of any facility damage will be charged to the renter. 
  • If there is a fecal or other bodily fluid release, CDC response guidelines will be followed. 
  • Swimming under the bulkhead is prohibited. 
  • Request for use of the Henderson Pool can be made by completing the Henderson Pool Reservation Request Form found on the Marshall Recreation Center website. This form will be reviewed within 72 hours and the Assistant Director will contact the requester for additional as needed. 
  • All requests for pool use must be submitted a minimum of 30 days prior to the event. 
  • Requests cannot be made more than 9 months in advance. 
  • Management reserves the right to decline facility usage for any person/organization submitting a facility rental request. 
  • Rental fees can be paid with cash or check. Checks are to be made out to Marshall University and dropped off or mailed to:

  • Facility rentals are subject to a 25% deposit if it is deemed necessary by the Director of Campus Recreation. This deposit fee will be provided in writing with your e-mail confirmation. The deposit fee will be applied to the total cost of the facility rental. 
  • The Assistant Director will determine if extra staffing will be required. If it is determined extra staffing will be needed the person/organization responsible for this fee will be notified in writing with email confirmation of the event.  
  • Renters must supply a copy of a valid insurance policy as outlined in the rental contract. 
  • Confirmation of acceptance of the request will be sent by email with a contract or invoice. This email will include all policies and procedures for the use of the pool. The request is finalized when the contract and insurance policy are received and returned.  
  •  All rentals agree to comply with all University policies as well as the policies for the Henderson Center Pool.
