We enroll more than 14,000 students (10,000 undergraduate and 4,000 graduate and medical and professional students), including over 160 international students from more than 50 countries.

If you wish to earn your undergraduate degree in the United States at Marshall University, you can apply to be an international student at Marshall. (To review other types of students who can apply to Marshall, please visit our Admissions page.)

An international student is a student who requires or possesses a visa to live or study in the United States. Marshall University is authorized to enroll F-1 and J-1 international students.

International Freshman Student

An international freshman student is defined as an international student who has not enrolled in any college or university course following high school graduation and intends to seek an undergraduate degree.

International Transfer Student

An international transfer student is defined as an international student who wishes to pursue a degree from Marshall University but who has previously enrolled at another college or university.

International Transient (Exchange) Student

An international transient student is as student who is pursuing a degree at another college or university but would like to take classes at Marshall University. An international transient student also may be an international student participating in a reciprocal exchange agreement. An international transient student may attend Marshall University for no more than two consecutive semesters.

International Readmitted Student

An international readmitted student is a student who attended Marshall University at least one year ago and who has not enrolled at any college or university since being enrolled at Marshall.

General Information for International Undergraduate Students

Admission Requirements

Freshmen

Equivalent of U.S. high school diploma (via NACES member credential evaluation report) See below for details. 2.00 Cumulative secondary GPA (as determined by the NACES member credential evaluation report)

International GPA requirements are equivalent to domestic GPA requirements and vary by program

ACT/SAT required for some programs and merit-based scholarships

Proof of English Proficiency (61 TOEFL, 6.0 IELTS, 90 Duolingo)

Transfer

Must be eligible to return to the last institution attended

Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 (as determined by the NACES member credential evaluation report)

Applicants with less than 30 semester hours of transfer credit must meet freshman requirements

Proof of English Proficiency (61 TOEFL, 6.0 IELTS, 90 Duolingo)

Application Deadlines

International applicants must submit ALL required documents by the following deadlines to be considered for admission:

Spring Semester – October 15

Summer semester – March 15

Fall semester – June 15

Application Process

Submit the International Application for Undergraduate Admission. Currently, application fees for degree-seeking programs are waived for international applicants.
Request all official, required admission items listed on the application portal to be sent directly to the Office of International Admissions. See Official Credential Policy.
If you would like to grant information access to a representative, friend, or family member, complete the Student Information Access Form.
If a representative is assisting with the application process, submit the Application Cover Sheet.
Once all requested credentials are received, wait for an admission decision. Decision letters will be sent to the student email address provided on the application.

Official Credential Policy

Official credentials are received by the Marshall University Office of International Admissions directly from the issuing examination board, credential evaluation company, or records office. Student copies of transcripts, evaluations, faxed copies of college transcripts, or credentials issued to any party other than Marshall University are not considered official.

NACES member credential evaluation reports must be sent to Marshall directly from the evaluation company to be considered official. We have an online portal with many evaluation companies.

After Admission

Once the application, and all requested credentials are received, an admission decision will be made within 2-3 business days. Students will receive email notification of the admission decision with any additional steps for full admission and receiving a Form I-20 or DS-2019. To receive an I-20, students must submit all required admission materials, proof of financial support, and a copy of the passport. Additional documents may be requested for students requesting Forms I-20 for dependents or transferring a SEVIS record to Marshall University.
